Skelton Park Miners

A lovely vintage photograph taken at Skelton Park mine, sadly I have no specific names or a date.

A couple of points to note, many of the miners are carrying their own ‘midge’ lamps with a naked flame, rather than a Safety/Davy lamp that many people expect to see. Local mines rarely had explosive gases (although the Lingdale explosion of 1953 is the exception to this rule)

Also the strings below the knees on the trousers, some suggest that this practice was to stop rats running up your leg.
Although other sources suggest it was just to keep the long trousers up out of the mud and water.
