  1. It would appear that he was born in the Union Workhouse at Northallerton. Certainly, there was a baptism of a John William Walker on 1st February 1868 in the parish church at Northallerton. His parent was given as Margaret Walker, a single woman, whose abode is shown as Northallerton (Union Workhouse).

By the 1881 census, his mother was married to James Russell and they were living at No.1 Spawood. John William, aged 14, was a Horse Driver in the ironstone mines. John married Phoebe Heatherington on 9th September 1889 at All Saints, Skelton-in-Cleveland. In 1891 he and Phoebe were living at 23 Charltons Cottages, a home which they shared with Phoebe’s mother and brother.

In 1901, John and Phoebe were living at 26 Charltons Terrace. His age was given as 33 and his occupation as Ironstone Miner underground. There were no children in the household; and no sign of the in-laws.
